The Analogue Prototyper
R.A.P Gun
(Rapid Additive Prototyper) Gun.
The Analogue Prototyper
This concept is a statement about the loss of individual product uniqueness through modern manufacturing techniques. Both 3D printing and automated manufacturing processes take very little human interaction in the production of objects. This creates a disconnect between the people producing, and using those very products. With ‘The Analogue Prototyper’s stripped back approach to 3D printing i wish to reverse this trend and put the human interaction and influence back into the production of objects. Therefore reconnecting the individual person to the individual product whether in its’ production or use.
‘The Analogue Prototyper’ I will take the modern version of a 3D printer back to its essential parts then devolve them to their earliest incarnations. The modern printer head control system of electric motor on metal rail and roller, will be replaced by a hand cranked wooden gear and rope pulley system. Modern additive materials like resins will be replaced by an analogue equivalent such as clay or wax. Digital data or co-ordinates will be replaced by analogue controls such as, turn crank clockwise 3 revolutions and hold for 2 seconds.
Data type will be based on modern mass production vs. ancient individual creation. Precision and accuracy vs. individuality and uniqueness. Correlating a broad scope of data for a wide range of outcomes. The physical output will be mostly based upon the individuals specific requirements and will be strongly influenced by other peoples interaction.
My skill-set toward the embodiment of this concept will be my experience with wood working, mechanics and gearing, and rigging.
R.A.P Gun
(Rapid Additive Prototyper) Gun.
The gun is usually associated with death and destruction, but with the ‘R.A.P Gun’ this idea has been turned on its’ head. The ‘R.A.P’ Gun is actually an ethical weapon that creates life instead of destroying it. Based on the same mechanical principles of a gun (a device (usually weapon) that discharges with explosive force a bullet or projectile in a required direction) but used in a positive and constructive way.
The ‘R.A.P Gun’ will be powered by compressed air, being easy to modulate power output and safer than using explosive substances. Compressed air will be provided by either a rechargeable pressurised container or an air compressor with a top loading gravity fed magazine for projectiles. The direction of the ‘R.A.P Gun’ will be adjusted mechanically by two pivoting systems. One on the X and Y (vertical) axis and the other on the Z (horizontal) axis. Co-ordinates will be given to servo motors that will adjust the pivoting systems. Data will most likely be converted into G-code to activate the servo motors.
Data type will be based on casualties of war and their relationship to military expenditure. Data gathering will be done through international statistics gathering institutions and represented in a scale based system to show the differences in scope. Data will be physically represented in a 3D printed model with the shooting of projectiles or additive material against a surface. The projectiles will require a force or contact with another substance to be activated or brought into life. Meaning, with every shot you fire more life is brought into existence. Using seeds that need an impact to break their outer protective shell to allow them to germinate could be an option for a projectile.
My skill-set toward the embodiment of this concept will be my mechanical engineering education and experience, along with a youth-hood full of producing home-made weaponry and explosive devices.
